Dubuque man sentenced to over 12 years for drug distribution, exploitation

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

A Dubuque man has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison for his involvement in drug distribution crimes. Ian Michael Bonnette, aged 45, admitted guilt to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl pills in a plea agreement on July 30, 2024. This is not his first brush with the law, as he was previously convicted for a federal firearms offense.

During the sentencing hearing, evidence revealed Bonnette's exploitation of women by offering them methamphetamine in exchange for sex. Many of these women were reportedly homeless and financially disadvantaged. Additionally, he was found to have threatened a woman with a knife over missing drugs.

Judge Leonard T. Strand delivered the sentence of 151 months at a hearing in Cedar Rapids. Following his time in prison, Bonnette will be under supervised release for four years. The federal system does not offer parole.
