The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has taken a firm stance opposing a Department of Energy (DOE) rule regarding energy efficiency. The rule, which proposes increased standards for consumer gas-fired instantaneous water heaters, has drawn criticism from small business advocates. The NFIB sent a letter to the U.S. Senate advocating for the resolution H.J. Res. 20 to reverse this DOE regulation.
Adam Temple, NFIB Senior Vice President for Advocacy, criticized the ruling by stating, “Small businesses believe that consumers and business owners should have the freedom to decide which product works best for their specific needs, no matter what fuel source the product uses.” Temple added, “Unfortunately, DOE finalized a rule that would set new arbitrary energy efficiency standards for natural gas-fired water heaters that would effectively ban more affordable appliance options for consumers and small businesses, such as tankless water heaters.”
Temple emphasized that at a time when inflation remains a pressing issue for small businesses, regulations regarding common appliances could add to their financial burdens. The NFIB's letter to the Senate expounds upon these concerns.
The NFIB has been a longstanding advocate for small and independent businesses in the United States. Established in 1943, NFIB represents these businesses across the nation and continues to operate as a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization.
