A Chinese citizen has been indicted by a federal grand jury in New Haven after an alleged escape from a correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut. Marc H. Silverman, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, made the announcement. The defendant, XIAOQIN YAN, aged 31, faces charges for escaping on December 10, 2024, from the Federal Satellite Low facility at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury. At the time, Yan was serving a prison sentence for arson and possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, imposed in the Middle District of Alabama.
The indictment comes after Yan was apprehended on the same day as the escape. If convicted, Yan could face a maximum prison term of five years. Silverman emphasized, "An indictment is not evidence of guilt. A charge is only an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt."
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Danbury Police Department. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia E. King.
