Oakland man receives seven-year sentence for firearm possession as a felon

Ismail J. Ramsey, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California

Pedro Juarez, a resident of Oakland, California, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison. The sentencing, announced by Acting United States Attorney Patrick D. Robbins and ATF Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Cicolani, follows Juarez's conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as a felon. The judgment was delivered by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer.

Juarez, 33, was found guilty of the charges on September 25, 2024. Trial evidence indicated that on August 16, 2023, Juarez coerced an acquaintance to travel with him from San Jose to San Francisco. After releasing her, the woman contacted 9-1-1, prompting a police response. Juarez attempted to flee from police officers and, during his escape, pulled a handgun from his waistband. As he aimed at the officers, his arm struck a railing, causing the firearm to drop. The weapon was loaded with ammunition.

In addition to the 84-month prison sentence, Judge Breyer ordered Juarez to serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. Juarez is also required to forfeit his interest in the firearm and ammunition seized during the arrest. He remains in custody and will immediately begin serving his sentence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ivana Djak and Noah Stern, with assistance from Tina Rosenbaum and Madeline Wachs. The investigation was conducted by the ATF.
