A Las Vegas resident has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for her involvement in a series of mail thefts and post office box destructions. Amanda Gonzalez-Valerio, the individual involved in these crimes, will also serve three years under supervised release following her prison term, as ruled by United States District Judge Cristina D. Silva.
The criminal activities occurred over 17 different incidents from June 2023 to September 2024. During this period, Gonzalez-Valerio used a pry bar to forcefully open locked mailboxes and stole mail belonging to more than ten individuals, according to courtroom documents.
One particular instance highlighted in the court documents occurred on September 10, 2023. Gonzalez-Valerio was accused of breaking into a mailbox rented by a Las Vegas casino, where she seized a winning betting ticket. The ticket, originally sent to the casino by a victim who had recently won a parlay bet, was subsequently cashed by Gonzalez-Valerio two days post theft. This action resulted in the illegal acquisition of $3,377.60.
In January 2025, Gonzalez-Valerio entered a guilty plea to one count of theft or receipt of mail matter and one count of destruction of letter boxes or mail.
The case was presented by United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada and was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Justin Washburne handling the prosecution.
