Utah felon sentenced to 8 years for drug and gun offenses

Anthony Owen Pawley, a 66-year-old from Murray, Utah, has been sentenced to 96 months in prison following his arrest in 2024. Authorities seized over 40 pounds of methamphetamine, 15,000 fentanyl pills, and a firearm in his possession. Judge David Sam imposed the sentence after Pawley pleaded guilty in February 2025 to charges including possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl with intent to distribute, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Pawley will also serve five years of supervised release.

The arrest occurred on May 9, 2024, after detectives from the Salt Lake City Police Department's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team stopped Pawley for a traffic violation. A search revealed methamphetamine, fentanyl pills, and $35,665 in cash. Additional searches of his residence and storage unit uncovered more drugs, a GForce Arms shotgun, and ammunition.

Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah emphasized the priority of protecting citizens and combatting drug distribution. "I am grateful for our law enforcement partnerships," said Viti. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd praised the collaboration in the investigation, stating, "Their work is directly responsible for removing dangerous drugs from our streets and holding drug traffickers accountable."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah, were involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case, which is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This program aims to reduce gun violence and other crimes by fostering community trust and strategic enforcement priorities.

The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team is a specialized unit within the Salt Lake City Police Department focused on apprehending violent criminals. Operating under the Special Operations Division, the team collaborates with various divisions to address violent crime trends in Salt Lake City.
