Matthew R. Molsen United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska | U.S. Attorney for the District of Nebraska
Acting United States Attorney Matthew R. Molsen reported that Troy D. Murphy, aged 34, from Omaha, Nebraska, received a sentence on April 16, 2025, in a federal court in Omaha for escaping federal custody. United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher sentenced Murphy to 15 months in prison. There is no system of parole in federal sentences. After completing his prison term, Murphy will serve a 3-year supervised release period.
Troy Murphy had previously been sentenced on October 12, 2021, to 77 months of incarceration. This sentence was due to his convictions for transferring a firearm to a prohibited individual and for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. During his incarceration, he was housed at Dismas Charities in Omaha, a non-secure facility where he required authorization to leave.
Murphy escaped on October 11, 2024, when employees of Dismas Charities discovered he had left the facility unauthorized. Security footage captured him leaving at 10:02 p.m., and his location remained untraceable until his arrest by the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force on October 30, 2024, at his mother's house in Omaha. He surrendered without any resistance.
The investigation of this case was carried out by the United States Marshals Service.
