Venezuelan national admits resisting arrest by ICE officers in Providence

A Venezuelan national admitted in federal court to resisting arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Deportation Officers in Providence. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the case details.

Edward Antonio Reyes Calderon, aged 22, confessed to resisting arrest violently, injuring two deportation officers in the process. The incident occurred outside the Rhode Island District Court on February 13, 2025, after Reyes Calderon appeared in state court for a domestic violence charge and was set to be released on bail.

Court information suggests that Reyes Calderon became aggressive and tried to evade arrest as three officers attempted to apply handcuffs. The struggle lasted several minutes, during which an officer used pepper spray to gain control. Two officers sustained minor injuries.

Reyes Calderon pleaded guilty to the federal charge of resisting arrest. His sentencing is scheduled for July 22, 2025. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district judge, considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

The prosecution team includes Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Taylor A. Dean.

This case is part of "Operation Take Back America," a national initiative utilizing the Department of Justice's resources to tackle illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguard communities from violent crime perpetrators.
