Detroit woman sentenced to 30 years for drug trafficking

A Detroit woman, Chanel Lashae Logan, 25, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison following her involvement in a drug trafficking operation. U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves handed down the sentence in Lexington, Kentucky, on Monday. Logan was convicted on charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as possession with intent to distribute these drugs.

Between March and June 2024, Logan worked with co-defendant Saruba Asante Smith to distribute large amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl in the Lexington area. Court records reveal Logan's admission to selling these substances to an undercover operative on two occasions in April and May 2024. Authorities intercepted Logan and Smith on June 6, 2024, as they returned from Detroit with a significant quantity of drugs. Law enforcement discovered 6.8 kilograms of methamphetamine and 76 grams of fentanyl in Logan's vehicle. A subsequent search at their apartment in Lexington yielded an additional 4.3 kilograms of methamphetamine and 892 grams of fentanyl.

Saruba Smith has already been sentenced to 92 months in prison for his part in the operation.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Logan is required to serve at least 85% of her sentence. Once released, she will remain under supervision by the U.S. Probation Office for five years.

The sentence was announced by Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Jim Scott, Special Agent in Charge of the Louisville Field Division of the DEA; Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police; Chief Lawrence Weathers of the Lexington Police Department; and Sheriff David Charles of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. The case was investigated by these agencies in collaboration.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger West is prosecuting the case. The operation forms part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative, which targets high-level criminal organizations through a combined prosecutorial and intelligence framework.
