U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry have detained a fugitive linked to an outstanding felony warrant for two counts of indecent liberties with a child. The arrest occurred at the Gateway International Bridge when the fugitive attempted to enter the United States on April 18 as a driver of a 2016 GMC vehicle.
Port Director Tater Ortiz commented on the nature of such offenses, stating, "The apprehensions of persons wanted in connection with alleged felony sexual offenses involving children are among the most heinous of crimes that we encounter. They highlight the vital role CBP officers play in the pursuit of justice and keeping our border communities safe."
Mark Anthony Renteria, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen from San Benito, Texas, was taken into custody. After his referral to CBP secondary inspection, officers confirmed an active warrant for two counts of indecent liberties with a child issued by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office in Salina, Kansas. Renteria was then transferred to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC), a centralized database, aids law enforcement agencies in sharing information, including outstanding warrants for various offenses. Past arrests by CBP officers using NCIC data have included individuals wanted for crimes such as homicide, escape, and sexual child abuse. It is important to note that criminal charges are allegations, and defendants remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
