Kevin Hopkins, a 39-year-old resident of Washington D.C., has been indicted by the U.S. District Court for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. The indictment is part of the "Make D.C. Safe Again" initiative, a public safety effort spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. to reduce violent crime in the District of Columbia.
"Make D.C. Safe Again" aims to address gun violence in the area by prioritizing federal firearms violations, seeking tougher penalties for offenders, and advocating for detention of federal firearms violators. This initiative is led by U.S. Attorney Martin, in collaboration with Special Agent in Charge Ibrar A. Mian of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Washington Division, Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Hopkins' legal troubles began when a search warrant was executed in November 2024 by the MPD Violent Crime Suppression Division and the DEA Task Force. The search, conducted at the 4300 block of 3rd Street SE, resulted in the discovery of a 9mm handgun with ammunition in the chamber and 14 rounds in the magazine, hidden between sofa cushions. No firearms were registered to the address. At the time of the search, Hopkins was on supervised release following a conviction for assault, burglary, and stalking related to a 2016 case. Hopkins was initially charged in D.C. Superior Court.
The investigation is jointly conducted by the DEA Washington Division, the ATF Washington Field Division, and the Metropolitan Police Department. It is important to note that an indictment is an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
