Former COO sentenced to 36 months for Morgantown clinic fraud

Francisco Ortiz, previously the chief operating officer of a medical practice in Morgantown, has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for bank fraud. The court noted that Ortiz, 50, from Vacaville, California, illegally diverted over $650,000 from Wedgewood Physicians, Inc. for personal use, including travel, home improvements, and online purchases.

Additionally, some of the funds were used to benefit James Mersing, a former physician at the practice. Mersing had pled guilty to his involvement and received his sentence in October 2024.

In court, Ortiz was ordered to pay restitution totaling $692,176.19 and will undergo five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar represented the government, while proceedings were overseen by Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh.
