A Brazilian national residing in Worcester has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of unlawful reentry into the United States after deportation. The individual, Thiago Aquino-De Paula, aged 34, has been charged with one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. The charges were initially filed by complaint in March 2025, and Aquino-De Paula is currently held in federal custody.
According to the charging documents, Aquino-De Paula was deported from the United States three times previously, with one deportation occurring on or about November 4, 2021. It is alleged that after this deportation, he reentered the United States illegally without permission. His presence was discovered in Massachusetts following an arrest in Uxbridge for allegations related to operating under the influence.
The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a possible fine of up to $250,000. Upon completion of any sentence imposed, the defendant is subject to deportation. Sentencing decisions are made by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kaitlin J. Brown from the Worcester Branch Office is leading the prosecution.
"The details contained in the charging documents are allegations," officials said. "The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
