A Forsyth County man, Tyree Ray Long, was sentenced to 37 years in prison after pleading guilty to several charges related to an incident involving law enforcement. Acting United States Attorney Randall S. Galyon of the Middle District of North Carolina announced the sentencing, which took place in Greensboro.

Tyree Ray Long, aged 28, received a sentence from United States District Judge William L. Osteen Jr., which included 120 months for being a felon in possession of a firearm and three years of post-release supervision. Additionally, he was sentenced to 204 months for assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon and another 120 months for discharging a firearm during the assault on law enforcement. The latter two sentences will run consecutively with five years of concurrent post-release supervision.

The events leading to Long's arrest began on April 21, 2022, when officers from the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to reports of shots fired during a domestic disturbance. A woman reported that her boyfriend, Long, had shot at her and her daughter as they attempted to leave their residence following an argument. Although the vehicle was hit four times, no injuries were reported.

Following an investigation by law enforcement agencies including the US Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force (USMS FTF), Long was located at a hotel parking lot in Winston-Salem on April 26, 2022. As officers attempted to apprehend him, Long drove forward into police vehicles blocking his exit and led officers on a car chase through various areas including Wake Forest University off-campus housing. During this pursuit, he reportedly fired approximately ten shots at pursuing officers.

The chase concluded when Long crashed into traffic at University Parkway and fled on foot toward nearby buildings where he fired another shot at pursuing officers before being detained.

Long pleaded guilty on August 5, 2025, to charges including Felon in Possession of a Firearm under U.S.C sections; Assault on a Federal Officer using Deadly Weapon; and Discharging Firearm During Crime of Violence.

This case involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the Winston-Salem Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms & Explosives among others who assisted in its prosecution by Special Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Martin alongside Assistant United States Attorney Nicole R DuPré.
