Former postal worker sentenced for mail theft in New Orleans

Sonia Miller, a 54-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been sentenced to three years of probation for stealing contents from U.S. mail. The sentencing was delivered by United States District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown on April 24, 2025. Miller had previously pleaded guilty to the theft of U.S. mail matter by a postal employee, an offense under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1709(a).

In addition to probation, Judge Brown imposed a $100 mandatory special assessment fee on Miller.

Court documents reveal that on or about March 14, 2023, Miller unlawfully removed items from several parcels of mail that were entrusted to her in her capacity as a postal employee.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson commended the efforts of the United States Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General in this case. The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman from the General Crimes Unit.
