An 18-year-old resident of Edinburg, Texas, has been charged with possessing a firearm on school property. This was announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. The individual, Kinzey Lira, is set to make his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia S. Medrano.
According to the criminal complaint filed on May 6, authorities discovered that Lira allegedly had a Glock 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine in his backpack while on school premises. If found guilty, Lira could face up to five years in federal prison and a potential fine of $250,000.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Guerra is responsible for prosecuting the case.
It is important to note that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and not proof of guilt. Under the law, a defendant remains innocent until proven guilty through due process.
