The Stimson Center has announced the appointment of Dr. Daniel Markey as a Senior Fellow with its South Asia and China programs. Dr. Markey is recognized for his expertise in China-South Asia relations, U.S. foreign policy in the region, and great power competition in the Indo-Pacific.
Dr. Markey previously served as a senior advisor at the U.S. Institute of Peace, focusing on India, South Asian security and politics, and China's regional policies. He also holds a position as a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). His academic background includes a PhD in political science from Princeton University.
Elizabeth Threlkeld, Director of the South Asia Program at Stimson Center, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Markey's appointment: “We’re delighted to have Dan join the Stimson Center as a Senior Fellow,” she said. “His extensive knowledge of the region will enrich our analysis and further strengthen our research and engagement efforts.”
Yun Sun, Director of the China Program, echoed this sentiment: “Dan’s addition to our team marks an exciting step forward for the Stimson Center,” she stated. “His in-depth understanding of regional dynamics will be a tremendous asset as we expand our cross-regional analysis and strengthen our policy engagement.”
Dr. Markey himself shared his excitement about joining Stimson: “I look forward to contributing to the work of the Stimson Center’s South Asia and China programs.” He emphasized the importance of bridging these two programs given China's growing role in South Asia and the significance of Sino-Indian relations to regional security.
The Stimson Center is known for promoting international security through applied research and independent analysis. It has been active for over three decades since its founding during the late Cold War period.
