Montgomery man sentenced to 15 years for firearm charge after police chase

Kevin P. Davidson, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama

A Montgomery man, Lorenzo Anterrio Monta, has been sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. This follows his conviction in federal court. Upon completing his prison term, Monta will be under supervised release for three years. Federal sentences do not include the possibility of parole.

The incident leading to Monta's arrest occurred on March 21, 2024. Officers from the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) identified a stolen vehicle near Eastdale Road and Atlanta Highway. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated, resulting in a high-speed chase.

During this pursuit, Monta, who was a passenger in the vehicle, leaned out and fired multiple shots at the pursuing police car. The chase concluded when the vehicle stopped and both occupants fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers. A handgun was found in Monta's possession upon his arrest.

Monta has previous felony convictions that prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition. He pleaded guilty on December 20, 2024, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

“Lorenzo Monta’s actions showed a complete disregard for public safety and law enforcement,” said Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson. “Firing a weapon during a high-speed pursuit placed countless lives at risk. The sentence imposed was the maximum allowed by statute and reflects the seriousness of the offense."

The case was investigated by MPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Assistant United States Attorney Eric M. Counts prosecuting.
