The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has passed the Gerald E. Connolly Esophageal Cancer Awareness Act in memory of its late Ranking Member, Gerald E. Connolly. The bipartisan legislation aims to highlight the impact of esophageal cancer, promote research into preventive treatments, and task the Government Accountability Office with assessing healthcare spending related to this cancer under the Federal Employee Health Benefits program.
Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) expressed his condolences over Connolly's passing, describing him as a "true statesman" who was dedicated to public service for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. Comer highlighted their collaboration on eight bills and emphasized Connolly's commitment to bipartisanship and advocacy against esophageal cancer. "I urge my colleagues to support this commonsense, bipartisan legislation and join us in the fight to end esophageal cancer," said Comer.
Representative Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) praised Connolly for his lifelong dedication to serving others and advocating for justice and transparency. He commended Connolly's legislative skills and public service ethos while acknowledging the contributions of his staff throughout his career. "Gerry was the epitome of a public servant, and he will be deeply missed," Lynch remarked.
Connolly had initially introduced the bill alongside Chairman Comer as part of their shared efforts in Congress before his recent passing.
