A Honduran national residing illegally in Brockton has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States unlawfully after deportation. Oscar Lopez, also known as "Luis Maldonado," admitted guilt in a federal court in Boston to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. The 41-year-old was arrested on April 16, 2025, and has been held in custody since then. Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV of the U.S. District Court has scheduled his sentencing for July 1, 2025.
The charging documents reveal that Lopez is a citizen of Honduras who first entered the United States illegally in 2003. He failed to appear for an Immigration Court date that year and was ordered removed but wasn't deported until January 2013. Lopez returned without permission just months later and was removed again in May 2013. He returned once more at an unspecified time, leading to his detection by Immigration and Customs Enforcement following arrests by state authorities in March and April 2024.
The charge against Lopez carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine reaching $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley alongside Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director for Boston's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds from the Criminal Division is prosecuting the case.
