U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum have signed a joint memorandum on wildfire preparedness, emphasizing coordination between their departments for the upcoming fire season. This effort is aimed at enhancing collaboration with state, local, and Tribal partners to ensure an effective response to wildfires.
Prior to signing the memo, both secretaries attended a 2025 operational fire briefing at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service National Fire Desk.
“President Trump has directed the entire federal government to take immediate action to protect the people, communities, and the natural resources our country depends on from wildfire risk,” stated Secretary Rollins. She emphasized that USDA is focused on providing necessary resources for a strong wildland firefighting force.
Secretary Burgum outlined their mission as “protect lives, defend critical infrastructure, and preserve the natural landscapes that sustain our way of life.” He stressed that through unity and preparation, the United States is prepared for this year’s wildfires.
In addition to the joint memo, Secretary Rollins issued a Secretarial Memorandum to improve USDA’s wildfire response strategy. This document sets clear expectations for USDA's approach and directs organizational actions within the Forest Service to boost operational readiness by allowing staff across departments to participate in temporary fire assignments.
