Andy Byford appointed special advisor for New York Penn Station redevelopment

Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy has announced the appointment of Andy Byford as Special Advisor to the Amtrak Board of Directors for the redevelopment of New York Penn Station. Byford will report directly to the Amtrak directors and work closely with the Department of Transportation (USDOT) on this project through a master developer public-private partnership.

Byford is an experienced transportation professional with a background in major metropolitan public transportation systems in cities such as New York City, Toronto, London, and Sydney. He has been with Amtrak for several years in a Senior Vice President role and now takes on this key leadership position.

The redevelopment project aligns with President Trump's agenda to build efficiently and beautifully. "Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, America is building again," said U.S Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. "We’re thrilled to have Andy oversee the redevelopment and modernization of this vital transit hub."

Deputy Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury added, "Consistent with President Trump’s leadership and savvy approach to real estate, we’re ensuring accountability for critical infrastructure projects."

Last month, Secretary Duffy announced that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) would withdraw the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) from leading the Penn Station project in New York City. Instead, Amtrak will lead this initiative with support from USDOT and Byford at the helm.

Byford's objectives include renovating and modernizing the station, increasing concourse capacity and access, enabling safer operations, accommodating passenger service growth, and delivering a world-class experience for users.
