A Jamaican national living in Cleveland has been sentenced to over eight years in prison for trafficking more than 150 pounds of a popular party drug. Tonie Neno Mitchell, 34, was sentenced to 100 months by U.S. District Court Judge Benita Y. Pearson on May 29 after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
The case stems from a DEA investigation that began in July 2024 when agents executed a federal search warrant at Mitchell's residence. This action followed a money laundering probe that had already led to the seizure of more than $350,000 in suspected drug cash.
During the search, Mitchell attempted to escape but was apprehended. Agents discovered approximately 70 vacuum-sealed bags containing MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or molly, in his living room closet. According to DEA.gov, MDMA is often used as a "party drug" among young people due to its inhibition-reducing effects.
In addition to the drugs, investigators found a loaded 9mm handgun, ammunition, and a ledger notebook listing drug prices and debts in Mitchell's bedroom. They also recovered over $50,000 in cash and eight cellphones. Authorities determined that Mitchell was illegally residing in the United States since approximately August 2023.
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) led the investigation. OCDETF focuses on identifying and dismantling major criminal organizations through a coordinated approach involving multiple agencies. More information about their efforts can be found at Justice.gov/OCDETF.
