The American Petroleum Institute (API) has expressed approval of the Supreme Court's recent decision regarding the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The court's unanimous ruling aims to narrow the requirements for environmental reviews on major infrastructure projects.
Ryan Meyers, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of API, said, "Today, the Supreme Court took long overdue steps to restore NEPA to its original intent and ensure a broken permitting process doesn’t stand in the way of American oil and natural gas production." He added that the ruling highlights how NEPA has been used by activists to obstruct U.S. infrastructure projects, impacting American workers and consumers.
Meyers emphasized the need for further action: "Now it's time to build on this progress through comprehensive, commonsense permitting reform that removes barriers to the modern infrastructure needed to secure America's long-term energy future."
API represents various segments of the U.S. natural gas and oil industry, supporting nearly 11 million jobs nationwide. The organization includes approximately 600 members involved in producing, processing, and distributing most of the nation's energy. API also promotes environmental and safety advancements through initiatives like API Energy Excellence.
Founded in 1919 as a standards-setting body, API has developed over 800 standards aimed at improving operational safety, efficiency, and sustainability within the industry.
