A Guatemalan man has been sentenced in federal court in Boston for unlawful reentry into the United States. Edilzar Morales-Barillas, 36, received a 29-month prison sentence from U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. Following his imprisonment, Morales-Barillas will face deportation.
Morales-Barillas pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry in January 2025 after being charged on July 31, 2024. He was previously deported from the United States on May 14, 2021, but unlawfully returned at an unspecified time afterward.
Authorities became aware of his illegal presence on May 27, 2023, when he was arrested for a fourth offense of operating under the influence of alcohol.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director for Boston's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan of the Criminal Division.
