Senate committee reviews nominees for education and labor departments

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, delivered remarks during a hearing on four nominees from the Trump administration. The nominees are set to fill positions at the Department of Education, the Department of Labor, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The nominations include Penny Schwinn for Deputy Secretary of Education at the Department of Education; Kimberly Richey for Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education; Daniel Aronowitz for Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employee Benefits Security Administration at the Department of Labor; and David Keeling for Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Cassidy stated: "Thanks to our nominees for being here today. If confirmed, you’ll be crucial in advancing President Trump’s agenda, improving the lives of all Americans. I appreciate your willingness to serve."

He highlighted Dr. Schwinn's potential role in reforming a department he described as having lost its purpose due to bureaucracy and red tape. He noted her previous roles as Tennessee Commissioner of Education and Chief Deputy Commissioner of Education in Texas as key experiences.

Ms. Richey's nomination was discussed with an emphasis on her extensive experience addressing discriminatory practices in education settings nationwide. Cassidy pointed out that this experience is important as efforts continue to address antisemitism on college campuses.

Mr. Aronowitz's nomination focused on his commitment to improving health and retirement benefits for workers, with his legal expertise seen as an asset.

Lastly, Mr. Keeling's nomination was addressed with attention to his 30 years advocating for worker safety in the private sector. Cassidy mentioned that Mr. Keeling has support from both businesses and labor unions.

Cassidy concluded by thanking all witnesses before recognizing Senator Sanders for his opening statement.
