Bornstein Seafoods, based in Bellingham, Washington, has initiated a recall of 44,550 pounds of its Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat. The recall is due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This organism can cause serious infections in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals might experience only short-term symptoms like fever and diarrhea, listeria infection poses significant risks to pregnant women.
The affected shrimp was distributed directly to distributors and retailers in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia in Canada. There is also a possibility that the product reached other retailers nationwide. The shrimp can be identified by the Bornstein Seafoods branded packaging available in 1 lb. or 5 lb. plastic bags under the market name "Shrimp." Lot codes are printed on the lower left corner of the master case label and at the bottom on the back side of each bag.
No illnesses have been reported so far related to this recall. The issue was discovered through Bornstein Seafoods' routine sampling program when Listeria monocytogenes was detected in an in-process sample within their production environment. In response, distribution of this product has been halted while an investigation into the root cause continues.
This recall is being conducted with oversight from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consumers who purchased these products are advised to return them for a full refund at their place of purchase.
