A Newton resident has admitted guilt in a federal firearm offense, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office on June 10, 2025. James Welch, aged 29, pleaded guilty to the charge of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition in a Boston federal court.
U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper has set the sentencing date for September 11, 2025. Welch faced charges earlier this year in February.
The case stems from a search conducted on February 28, 2025, at Welch's residence in Newton. Authorities discovered a pistol, a rifle, and ammunition during the search. Due to prior felony convictions, Welch is legally barred from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The specific charge against Welch carries potential penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and a fine that could reach $250,000. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge following U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah Foley alongside Scott Riordan, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives' Boston Field Division. The Newton Police Department played an instrumental role in assisting with the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric L. Hawkins from the Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.
