U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Port of Buffalo's Peace Bridge border crossing recently discovered a significant quantity of marijuana in a rental truck. The incident occurred on June 15 when CBP officers encountered Ronald Nunn, a 43-year-old U.S. citizen, driving the vehicle.
Nunn claimed he was following GPS directions that inadvertently led him to Canada. Upon realizing the mistake, he returned to the United States via the Peace Bridge. During an initial inspection, Nunn informed officers that his truck was empty. However, further examination revealed several boxes in the back of the truck, contradicting his statement.
The vehicle was taken for secondary inspection where officers found three cardboard boxes containing 60 vacuum-sealed packages weighing approximately 78 pounds. Field tests confirmed the substance as marijuana with an estimated street value of $230,000.
Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone commented on the operation: "Our dedicated CBP officers continue to perform their jobs at the highest levels. Their training and experience help to keep our communities safe from these illegal narcotics."
Following this discovery, Nunn was detained and processed by CBP before being handed over to the Buffalo Police Department. He is expected to face felony charges for Criminal Possession Cannabis.
It is important to note that criminal charges are merely allegations and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
CBP describes itself as America's frontline, with over 65,000 personnel working across various domains to protect national security while facilitating lawful travel and trade.
