Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has initiated an investigation into Planned Parenthood, focusing on the alleged misuse of federal funds for abortion and "gender affirming care" procedures for minors. In a communication addressed to Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, Chairwoman Greene requested access to financial statements, federal funding details, and documents related to abortion services and medical interventions concerning gender affirmation in children.
Chairwoman Greene stated: “Planned Parenthood is an abortion giant that harvests organs from babies and uses nearly all of its resources to kill babies, not provide real healthcare. Despite receiving billions in taxpayer dollars, they offer almost no prenatal care, push late-term abortions, and even supply aborted babies for grotesque experiments. As a Christian, I believe every life is a gift from God, and I believe it’s time Congress holds them accountable and stops the flow of federal funds to this evil and barbaric organization.”
Planned Parenthood receives 39 percent of its annual revenue from federal funds meant for essential health services like cancer screenings. However, there are claims that these resources are increasingly allocated towards abortions. The organization's recent annual report indicates over 400,000 abortions were performed last year—an increase of 23 percent over the past decade. Comparatively fewer prenatal (63 percent less) and contraceptive services (38 percent less) were provided than ten years ago.
Furthermore, Planned Parenthood offers "gender affirming care," including cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers. Reports suggest minimal medical or psychological evaluations accompany these services. In FY 2022, 45 affiliate centers reportedly provided "gender-affirming" hormones; however, specific service numbers remain undisclosed publicly.
Excerpts from Greene's letter highlight concerns about compliance with federal funding laws: “The Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency is investigating Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., and its affiliates’ provision of abortion services and ‘gender affirming care’ for minors.” It also notes audio recordings indicating facilities offering minors same-day access to cross-sex hormones without sufficient medical oversight.
Greene emphasized the importance of ensuring that approximately $800 million in federal funds received by Planned Parenthood through Title X programs comply with legal regulations: “It is imperative that federal funds provided to Planned Parenthood via Title X of the Public Health Service Act (Title X), Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are administered in compliance with applicable laws."
