Pentagon shifts Greenland under U.S. Northern Command in strategic realignment

The President has ordered a modification to the Unified Command Plan, reassigning Greenland from the U.S. European Command's area of responsibility to that of the U.S. Northern Command.

According to Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell, this change aligns with "the President's intent and the Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance." The adjustment aims to enhance "the Joint Force's ability to defend the U.S. homeland," thereby contributing to a stronger defense posture in the western hemisphere and fostering deeper connections with Arctic allies and partners.

The Department of Defense conducts a review of the Unified Command Plan every two years, as mandated by Congress, or more frequently if necessary. This process ensures that each combatant command is appropriately structured and equipped to fulfill its missions and safeguard U.S. interests globally.
