A federal jury in Las Vegas has found Latonia Smith guilty of cyberstalking and making threats against two district court judges and a probation officer. The case, prosecuted by a San Diego trial team in the District of Nevada, concluded with the conviction after a six-day trial and less than one day of jury deliberation.
Smith was convicted for threatening U.S. District Judge Richard Franklin Boulware, who presided over her 2021 trial, as well as U.S. District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey and her probation officer Shawn Mummey. These individuals were involved in Smith's previous federal conviction related to death threats against lawyers.
At the time of the indictment, Smith was on supervised release from her 2021 conviction for targeting corporate lawyers defending her mother's dismissal from Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon emphasized that "threats directed at members of the judiciary are not only criminal acts but direct attacks on the rule of law." Rafik Mattar, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Las Vegas, stated that they take such threats seriously and work diligently to protect communities.
After being released from federal prison for her first case, Smith faced allegations related to an armed home invasion involving another lawyer connected to the Planet Hollywood case. Upon returning to Las Vegas after being granted bail in June 2022, she began searching online for information about Judge Boulware and his family while expressing hostility towards judges involved in her prior cases.
Smith sent emails containing threats and warnings to her probation officer and others involved with her past cases. These communications included references to mass casualty events and specific personal details about those targeted.
The victims testified at trial about their fear of Smith's potential actions based on previous behavior. U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro reported these threats to U.S. Marshals for protection measures.
FBI agents interviewed Smith before taking her into custody on June 27, 2022. During questioning about researching mass shooters, she remarked: "I think what they were thinking."
Investigations revealed that Smith searched phrases like “judges die” and “how to become a bomb maker,” while also viewing videos related to mass shootings multiple times over weeks leading up to these events.
The jury found Smith guilty on three counts of cyberstalking regarding emails sent to Judges Dorsey and Boulware along with Mummey but acquitted her on two other counts.
Smith remains detained pending sentencing; no date has been set yet for this proceeding under Senior District Court Judge Michael W Mosman’s oversight following reassignment due special designation by
