In June, recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada and the FBI Las Vegas Division are renewing their commitment to safeguard older citizens from fraudulent schemes. These crimes cost billions annually and threaten over 100,000 elder Americans each year.
"The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to protect our seniors from fraudulent schemes targeting their hearts and bank accounts," stated United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada. The office aims to continue collaborating with the FBI and other agencies to address financial exploitation crimes.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Rafik Mattar of the FBI Las Vegas Division emphasized the importance of educating seniors about elder fraud schemes. "These schemes are critical to protecting them and their hard-earned money," he said, highlighting how such scams can devastate elderly individuals' life savings.
The case against Aurora Phelps illustrates these concerns. A 21-count superseding indictment charges Phelps with multiple offenses including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, and kidnapping resulting in death. Phelps is accused of exploiting older men she met online for personal gain. She is currently detained in Mexico.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an allegation; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
For those aged 60 or older who have experienced financial fraud, assistance is available through the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311). Managed by the Office for Victims of Crime under the Justice Department, this hotline provides personalized support and resources on a case-by-case basis. Reporting incidents promptly can help authorities identify perpetrators and potentially recover losses.
