Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, led a hearing on the nominations of Usha-Maria Turner and David A. Wright for key environmental and nuclear regulatory roles.
In her opening statement, Chairman Capito outlined the significance of these nominations. She noted that "our consideration of Chairman Wright’s renomination comes at a crucial time" due to China's rapid expansion in nuclear energy and increasing global demand for clean power. Capito emphasized the importance of expanding nuclear energy safely, referencing bipartisan support for this initiative through legislation like the ADVANCE Act.
Capito detailed the role of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), explaining its creation from Congress's decision to separate promotion and regulation duties previously held by the Atomic Energy Commission. The NRC is tasked with regulating civilian use of nuclear technology.
Highlighting recent executive actions by President Trump aimed at accelerating nuclear power deployment, Capito stated that "the Chairman and the Commission must prioritize NRC’s actions" while maintaining safety standards.
David A. Wright has been serving as an NRC member since 2018 and was designated as Chairman in January by President Trump. His experience is considered essential for implementing new legislative measures while ensuring fundamental licensing activities continue smoothly.
The hearing also addressed Usha-Maria Turner's nomination as EPA Assistant Administrator for International and Tribal Affairs. If confirmed, Turner will oversee international environmental agreements in coordination with the Department of State and manage engagements with Tribal governments to implement environmental laws.
Chairman Capito expressed anticipation in discussing Turner's prospective role in supporting foreign policy efforts related to environmental protection.
