Ted Cruz emphasizes need for experienced leader at FAA during Senate session

In a Senate Commerce Committee executive session, Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) emphasized the need for strong leadership at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He urged his colleagues to support Bryan Bedford's nomination as FAA Administrator. Citing Bedford's extensive aviation industry experience and background as a pilot, Sen. Cruz believes he is well-suited to lead necessary cultural and operational changes at the FAA.

Sen. Cruz highlighted several legislative measures under consideration aimed at strengthening data protections for children online, reinforcing American leadership in commercial space development, restoring confidence in international athletic competitions, and promoting U.S. dominance in critical manufacturing.

During his remarks, Sen. Cruz stated: “Today we’ll consider the nomination of Bryan Bedford to be Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as five bills and a few Coast Guard promotions."

He praised Bedford’s commitment to aviation safety during his 25-year tenure at Republic Airways, noting its growth into one of the safest regional airlines with over 200 aircraft. "Mr. Bedford doesn’t just have an exemplary safety record at Republic; he’s also a pilot himself," said Sen. Cruz.

Sen. Cruz contrasted Bedford's qualifications with those of a previous FAA nominee from President Biden’s administration who lacked aviation experience. “Well, Bryan Bedford is a pilot, he knows aviation,” he asserted.

Senator Cruz also mentioned a recent tragic accident involving an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines flight that resulted in 67 fatalities—the deadliest accident in over 15 years in the U.S.—to underline the importance of experienced leadership at the FAA.

The session also addressed significant legislation including Senator Markey’s Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act or COPPA 2.0 which updates data and privacy protections for minors aged 13-16.

Senator Cruz concluded by urging his colleagues to support both Bryan Bedford's nomination and the legislation under discussion: “I urge my colleagues to support both the nominee and the legislation we are considering.”
