Sun Prairie man sentenced for illegal firearm possession

Timothy M. O’Shea, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, has announced the sentencing of Javaris Nunn, a 33-year-old resident of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. On June 24, 2025, Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson sentenced Nunn to 30 months in prison for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon. Nunn had pleaded guilty to this charge on March 26, 2025.

The incident leading to the charges occurred on December 28, 2023. Nunn was found as a rear passenger in a vehicle stopped due to lacking a license plate. Officers discovered a backpack next to him containing an unloaded Glock 42 .380 caliber handgun and a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P .45 caliber handgun with its serial number scratched off. Although Nunn denied knowledge of these handguns, the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory identified his DNA on both weapons.

Nunn's criminal record includes prior felony convictions for theft from a person, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and robbery. As such, he is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

During sentencing, Judge Peterson considered both Nunn’s difficult past and positive traits alongside his extensive criminal history and the gravity of his offense. "Nunn carrying firearms was a recipe for disaster," stated Judge Peterson. The sentence will run concurrently with another state revocation sentence, followed by three years of supervised release.

The investigation into Nunn's case was conducted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force comprising federal agents from ATF along with Task Force Officers from various state and local agencies within the Western District of Wisconsin. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted this case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the U.S. Justice Department aimed at reducing violent crime through coordinated efforts between state and federal prosecutors as well as law enforcement at all levels to address gun-related crimes.
