A Mexican national, Jose Mendoza-Zarrate, has been indicted on charges of unlawful reentry into the United States after deportation. The 41-year-old was arrested on May 20, 2025, and is set to appear in federal court in Springfield, Massachusetts at a future date.
According to the charging documents, Mendoza-Zarrate had previously been deported from the United States on four occasions: May 16, 2006; July 3, 2006; May 30, 2007; and August 30, 2007.
The charge of unlawful reentry carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Additionally, there could be a fine of up to $250,000. Upon completing any imposed sentence, Mendoza-Zarrate would face deportation once more. Sentencing decisions are made by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse from the Springfield Branch Office is leading the prosecution.
It is important to note that all details provided in the charging documents are allegations at this stage. Mendoza-Zarrate is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
