DHS ends TPS for Haiti, urges lawful status pursuit

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. The current TPS designation will expire on August 3, 2025, with the termination effective from September 2, 2025.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires a review of conditions in a country designated for TPS at least 60 days before its expiration. This process involves consultation with appropriate U.S. government agencies to determine whether the conditions that warranted the designation still exist.

A DHS spokesperson stated, “This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary.” The spokesperson noted that improvements in Haiti's environmental situation make it safe for Haitian citizens to return. They also encouraged individuals to utilize the Department’s resources, including the CBP Home app, to arrange their return. Additionally, eligible Haitian nationals may seek lawful status through other immigration benefits.

After consulting interagency partners and reviewing conditions in Haiti with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Department of State, Secretary Noem concluded that conditions have improved sufficiently for Haitians to safely return home. She determined that allowing Haitian nationals to remain temporarily in the United States does not align with U.S. national interests.

Haitian nationals are encouraged to use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection CBP Home app to report their departure from the United States.
