U.S. Attorney Timothy M. O'Shea retires after decades-long career

After 34 years of service, U.S. Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea has announced his retirement from the Department of Justice. Mr. O’Shea began his career with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin as an intern in January 1991 and was hired as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in August 1991. He held various roles including Senior Litigation Counsel, First Assistant U.S. Attorney, and Acting Civil Chief before being appointed Acting U.S. Attorney in March 2021 and later transitioning to U.S. Attorney in April 2022.

Throughout his career, Mr. O’Shea prosecuted a wide range of federal crimes such as money laundering, tax crimes, fraud, illegal weapons offenses, narcotics, bank robbery, murder, attempted murder, and other violent offenses. He focused particularly on computer and intellectual property crimes like trade secret theft and system intrusions. Notably, he led the prosecution in United States v. Sinovel, which resulted in the first federal jury trial conviction of a Chinese company for trade secret theft.

As U.S. Attorney, Mr. O’Shea served as the chief federal law enforcement officer in the Western District of Wisconsin overseeing all federal prosecutions and civil litigation involving the United States within the district. He collaborated with Federal, State, and local law enforcement on gun violence issues and participated in “Protecting Places of Worship” events across the district.

“It’s been a privilege to serve the citizens of the Western District of Wisconsin and to work with such a dedicated and talented group of attorneys and legal professionals,” said Mr. O’Shea.

Following his retirement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick Elgersma will assume the role of Acting U.S. Attorney until a formal nomination is made by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Mr. Elgersma has been with the district since 2017 after serving as a Special Agent with the FBI.
