Today, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum introduced the Patriot Program, a three-year pilot initiative aimed at restoring and revitalizing America's public lands in anticipation of the nation's 250th birthday. The program will involve a public-private partnership with an investment of $250 million directed towards infrastructure, preservation, and public access projects at iconic sites.
The Department of the Interior plans to match every federal dollar invested in the Patriot Program with 50 percent in private funding or in-kind contributions. This approach aims to leverage philanthropic support to enhance impacts, increase efficiency, and maximize taxpayer resources. The initiative will focus on historic preservation, masonry repairs, wildland fuel reduction, trail maintenance, and improved access to notable sites. Additionally, it seeks to engage youth and young adults by providing hands-on training in skilled trades and fostering pathways to sustainable careers.
Secretary Doug Burgum stated: “Under the leadership of President Trump, America’s 250th birthday will stand as a proud testament to the greatness of our nation.” He added that the Interior is proud to launch this initiative which aims to unite Americans in honoring heroes and celebrating shared history while preserving iconic places.
The Patriot Program is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior's efforts for America 250 commemoration set for 2026. Developed alongside the White House, it supports a nationwide celebration marking 250 years since American independence. The program aligns with Executive Order 14189 issued by President Donald J. Trump for a significant celebration.
