A man from Dubuque, Shon Dwayne Perkins, aged 37, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for selling fentanyl. The sentencing took place on July 1, 2025, following his guilty plea on December 19, 2024, to one count of distribution of a controlled substance near a protected location.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Perkins sold a mixture of fentanyl and xylazine near a protected area. It was also noted that multiple transactions involved fentanyl containing xylazine. A drug user who purchased and used these substances suffered necrosis of the arms, resulting in permanent scarring.
The sentencing was conducted by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids. In addition to the prison term of 60 months, Perkins is required to serve a six-year term of supervised release post-imprisonment. There is no parole option available within the federal system.
Perkins remains in custody under the United States Marshal until he is transferred to a federal prison facility.
Assistant United States Attorney Nicole L. Nagin prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force.
