The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has announced that James Eric Diggs, 47, from Hugo, has pleaded guilty to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. This offense carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
According to the indictment, Diggs was found with a semi-automatic pistol and 17 rounds of ammunition on February 5, 2025. He had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.
The investigation leading to this charge was conducted by the Hugo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The plea was accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason A. Robertson in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. A presentence investigation report will be completed as ordered by the judge.
The sentence will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other statutory factors. In the meantime, Diggs remains free on bond under certain conditions while awaiting sentencing.
