Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently addressed the press, emphasizing the importance of ASEAN as a primary channel for U.S. diplomatic engagement in Southeast Asia. He highlighted the deep ties between the United States and this region, noting that "the United States is a country that has deep ties in this region."

During his visit, Secretary Rubio had meetings with several leaders, including a productive discussion with China's Wang Yi. "It was a very productive meeting," he said, emphasizing the importance of regular engagement between the U.S. and China to maintain stability.

Rubio also mentioned an invitation extended to President Trump to visit China, stating it is "a visit he wants to undertake." He expressed optimism about scheduling this visit as both presidents are interested in making it happen.

Among the outcomes of his trip were several deliverables, such as entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysia on civil nuclear cooperation and announcing defense agreements with partner countries. Additionally, cyber security was identified as a critical area for future cooperation.

The Secretary addressed concerns about tariffs affecting ASEAN countries by clarifying that these measures are applied globally and not targeted at any specific nation or region. He explained that addressing trade deficits built up over decades is necessary for sustainable economic relations.

On bilateral engagements within ASEAN, Rubio reported positive receptions and strong partnerships. The 30th anniversary of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations was noted as an occasion for continued high-level interactions.

Rubio concluded by underscoring shared commitments to cyber security in anticipation of significant growth in digital economies across Southeast Asia: "Those platforms have to be secure... from cyber criminals... from nation-state actors."
