Subcommittee on Government Operations Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas) has announced a hearing to address the ongoing issue of mail theft and the response from the United States Postal Service (USPS). The hearing, titled "An Update on Mail Theft and Crime," aims to tackle the challenges faced by communities across the nation due to mail theft. This crime disrupts timely communication by hindering the delivery of important documents.
Chairman Sessions emphasized the seriousness of mail theft, stating, “Mail theft is a serious crime that needs to be addressed and combated. Delivery delays, stolen and fraudulent mail, and safety challenges in major cities all reduce USPS’s ability to effectively make important daily deliveries to Americans across the country. Mail carriers should be able to make deliveries without threats to their safety, and Americans should have peace of mind that their mail will arrive on time and untouched. I look forward to hearing from witnesses about their efforts to curb mail theft and fraud.”
The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. ET in HVC-210 at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center. It will feature testimonies from several key figures including Brendan Donahue, Inspector in Charge at the United States Postal Inspection Service; Julius Rothstein, Deputy Inspector General at the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General; Brian Renfroe, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers; Frank Albergo, President of the Postal Police Officers Association; and Anthony Holloway, Chief of Police for St. Petersburg's Florida Police Department.
The session will provide an opportunity for postal officials to discuss current efforts in reducing mail-related crimes and for Congress members to explore further measures that could support mail carriers against these issues.
The event will be available via livestream for those unable to attend in person.
