The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri has issued a warning about scammers impersonating their officials. These individuals falsely claim to be from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and use various tactics to deceive people.
In previous incidents, these scammers have provided fake badge numbers and alleged that they found the victim's phone number in a human trafficking victim's contacts list. They often request funds through mobile payment apps.
To appear credible, scammers sometimes use real names of federal prosecutors and federal office addresses. They may also spoof phone numbers so that caller IDs display as if they are from government agencies like the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
It is important to note that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will never ask anyone to purchase gift cards or provide credit card information.
Victims of such scam calls are urged to report them via https://www.ic3.gov/.
