Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) filed a detainer against an illegal alien accused of ambushing and shooting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in New York City. The incident occurred on July 19 at approximately 11:51 PM ET in Fort Washington Park under the George Washington Bridge.
A witness to the attack, which is believed to have been an attempted robbery, reported that she and the victim were sitting by the water when two individuals on a scooter approached them. One suspect dismounted with a firearm drawn. The off-duty CBP officer responded by drawing his own weapon in self-defense.
The officer sustained gunshot wounds to his right arm and left cheek but is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
One of the assailants has been identified as Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, an illegal alien from the Dominican Republic who entered the United States illegally on April 4, 2023. He was released into the country by the Biden Administration.
Nunez's criminal record includes multiple arrests by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for charges such as felony grand larceny, petit larceny, reckless driving, assault, and criminal contempt. Additionally, he was issued a criminal warrant for armed robbery with a firearm by Leominster Police Department in Massachusetts on February 21, 2025. After failing to attend his immigration hearing, Nunez received a final order of removal on November 6, 2024.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated: “This violent criminal illegal alien had multiple run-ins with NYPD for assault and felony grand larceny before he ambushed and shot a CBP officer. The Biden Administration arrested this criminal illegal alien at the border and chose to release him into our country to terrorize Americans. We are thankful that our brave law enforcement officer is in stable condition.” She further criticized sanctuary city policies: “Sanctuary city politicians allowed this to happen... Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, DHS will flood the zone in sanctuary cities and remove these criminals one by one.”
The second suspect remains at large. Anonymous tips can be reported via ICE's toll-free tip line or through their online form.
