U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling have expressed their support for President Trump's new artificial intelligence policy strategy, "Winning the Race: America’s AI Action Plan." This plan follows the President's January Executive Order titled “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.”
The AI Action Plan outlines steps needed for the U.S. to achieve global dominance in AI. It emphasizes the role of American workers and includes two key areas where the Department of Labor will play a significant part: “Empower American Workers in the Age of AI” and “Train a Skilled Workforce for AI Infrastructure.”
“Since day one, President Trump has made it his top priority to put American Workers First by expanding opportunity and ensuring all are prepared for the challenges of the future,” said Secretary Chavez-DeRemer. She highlighted efforts to boost AI literacy and invest in skills training as ways to prepare Americans for success.
Deputy Secretary Sonderling added, “The AI Action Plan demonstrates President Trump’s bold leadership in driving forward a worker-centric AI strategy that will create a new era of economic prosperity for American workers.” He noted plans to expand AI literacy nationwide and analyze its impact on labor markets.
The initiative "Empower American Workers in the Age of AI" includes actions such as prioritizing AI skills development, establishing an AI Workforce Research Hub, studying AI's labor market impact, funding retraining programs, and piloting workforce models.
Meanwhile, "Train a Skilled Workforce for AI Infrastructure" involves creating initiatives for high-priority occupations related to AI infrastructure. It also seeks partnerships with governments and stakeholders to develop training programs and expand apprenticeship opportunities.
