David M. Toepfer has officially taken the oath of office as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. This position makes him the chief federal law enforcement officer in the district, representing the United States in all federal and civil litigation.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron after his appointment on July 23 by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi. "It is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Northern Ohio in this role," stated Toepfer, expressing gratitude towards President Donald J. Trump and Attorney General Bondi for their trust.

Toepfer's nomination was made by President Trump earlier in July and is currently pending Senate confirmation. He will oversee a district that includes 40 northern counties in Ohio, with a population nearing six million people, managing nearly 200 attorneys and support personnel across offices located in Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown.

A seasoned prosecutor with almost three decades of experience, Toepfer joined the Northern District of Ohio as an Assistant United States Attorney in 2008 and held various leadership roles since then. Before this role, he served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Trumbull County for nine years and Portage County for two years.

Throughout his career, Toepfer has been recognized for his contributions to law enforcement initiatives such as leading the Violence and Gun Reduction Interdiction Program which earned him national recognition from the Department of Justice.

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Akron School of Law.

This appointment marks a significant milestone as it is over 117 years since someone from Youngstown has held this position within the district.
