The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $1.8 million grant to the Technical College System of Georgia. This funding is aimed at providing employment and training services for those affected by layoffs at Georgia-Pacific LLC.

Georgia-Pacific declared on May 14, 2025, that it would permanently close its Cedar Springs containerboard processing mill. The closure will lead to a mass layoff expected to start on August 1, 2025, impacting an estimated 535 workers.

The grant, managed by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, will enable the Technical College System of Georgia to offer retraining and skills development services for displaced workers in several counties including Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas, and Worth.

National Dislocated Worker Grants are supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. These grants provide state or local boards with funds for direct services in areas facing significant economic dislocation events where workforce needs surpass available resources.
