A federal grand jury has indicted Peter Baez, 41, of Northfield, Vermont, on charges of possession and sale of stolen firearms. The indictment was returned on July 10, 2025.

Baez pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle on August 7, 2025. Judge Doyle released Baez on conditions while he awaits trial.

According to court records and statements made at the arraignment, the case centers around firearms that previously belonged to Baez’s father, Pedro Baez. Pedro Baez died in the fall of 2024. His will left his home and property to his daughter. Despite knowing the terms of the estate, Peter Baez kept possession of his father’s firearms and sold some of them to local gun stores for personal gain.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that “an indictment contains allegations only and that Baez is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.” If convicted, Baez could face up to ten years in prison; however, sentencing would be determined by the District Court with consideration given to advisory guidelines and statutory factors.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher recognized the investigative work by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as well as assistance from the Berlin and Montpelier Police Departments: “I commend the investigatory efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and thank the Berlin and Montpelier Police Departments for their assistance.”

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt is prosecuting the case. William Vasiliou II represents Peter Baez.
